I’m Sondra Bateman and a certified lay minister within the Lutheran denomination. I started this blog some time ago to help me understand the lectionary better since I did not grow up in a liturgical church.
Yes, I grew up in a low church setting (low not meaning bad but one with little to no liturgy). It was only after attending a Catholic Mass with my Dad and step-mom was I truly introduced to it. We were in a gym, sitting on folding chairs for the service, but I felt like I had come home. It was the most amazing feeling. I knew it was right, but I never really acted on it for 15 years.
Skip forward to 2009 and I finally took the step to change denominations. I could feel Catholicism drawing me in, but there were things I had issues with. So I considered looking at Lutheranism.
Six months after I joined, our lay minister told me outright that I needed to go to the Parish Lay Missionary Academy to become a lay minister. I was like “no way! I will not do that!”
Six months later I attended my first class.
Never would I have known that I would be where I am today if I had not attended that first Catholic Mass.
